Welcome to this Bible study on UNDERSTANDING THE PICTURE OF MARRIAGE. Please notice the title. It has to do with understanding the PICTURE of marriage; it is not a study about marriage, per se. It is a study about what the picture of marriage portrays in the Scriptures. In the end, it all points to the coming marriage between the Jesus and His Bride.

These are the Scripture passages printed out for you to follow as you listen to each of the lectures that correspond to each of the lessons.

You will want to listen to (or watch) the Intro lecture prior to beginning your homework in Lesson One.

Grasping the Big Picture

Lesson 1
This first lesson lays out how God has given His Word, so that we can study according to the way He has given it. This lesson is fundamental to this study.

A Bride Taken from the Body

Lesson 2
Author: Cindy Zeigler
This lesson begins where the picture of marriage begins -- in Genesis chapter two. This lesson deals with how God formed the man, and subsequently took a part of the man's body put of him in order to form the woman. It reveals the marriage relationship between the first man and woman, as God brought them together. It also reveals the purpose for the marriage relationship.

God has a reason for giving the information that He gives concerning these things, and we will look at the details and the reasons for those details.

A Bride Taken from the Family

Lesson 3
Author: Cindy Zeigler
The next place we go to in Scripture to gain more detail concerning the picture of marriage is to the panoramic picture of Abraham, Sarah, Isaac and Rebekah (Gen. 21-25). In this lesson we see that after Sarah dies, Abraham sends his servant to his family's house in order to find a bride for the son. Again, there is reason for this. It all fits together to shape our understanding of what God is doing now in procuring a Bride for His Son, having sent the Holy Spirit to the Church on the Day of Pentecost.

A Bride Taken from the Gentiles

Lesson 4
Author: Cindy Zeigler
In this lesson, we cover two Old Testament stories of marriage -- that of Joseph, and Moses. Their stories are so similar, yet each gives pertinent details for our ensuing picture of marriage. The overall picture really begins to take shape with details from these two stories.

The Bride for Boaz, Part I

Lesson 5
Author: Cindy Zeigler
Lessons five and six form one long lesson (divided into two parts) on the beautiful story of Ruth and Boaz. No study concerning the picture of marriage would be complete without an indepth study on these four short chapter in the Old Testament from the Book of Ruth.

In Lesson five, we cover chapters one and two from the Book of Ruth. Hopefully you will come to understand something that all Christians should understand -- that we are all called to make a journey from the land of our birth to the land of our calling.

Additionally you will come to see that there is work to be done in Boaz's field. And this work must be done carefully, following Naomi's instruction.

A Bride for Boaz, Part II

Lesson 6
Author: Cindy Zeigler
The second part of this story of Ruth and Boaz reveals the need for preparations to be made for meeting Boaz at the threshing floor; and then finally the request for marriage and the redemption of the inheritance. In chapter four of RUTH, we see that Boaz does not rest until he has fulfilled Ruth's request. What a beautiful picture of Christ, willing and able to do all that His Bride will ask of Him.

The New Testament Picture of Marriage, Part I

Lesson 7
Author: Cindy Zeigler
These next two lessons (7 and 8) again make up another long lesson covering the New Testament passages concerning marriage. Lesson Seven covers the roles and responsibilities of the husband and the wife, respectively, as given in the New Testament.

The New Testament Picture of Marriage, Part II

Lesson 8
Author: Cindy Zeigler
Continuing in the New Testament passages on marriage, this lesson covers a most difficult topic -- that of divorce and remarriage. (Truthfully, this was the most difficult lesson I have yet written! I did not want to bring any bias into the lesson at all; I only desired to present this topic as honestly as I possibly could from a purely Scriptural perspective.)

I chose to name these two lessons as I did, so that people would not be tempted to do this lesson first, but rather that they would have completed all the previous lessons prior to coming to this one on divorce and remarriage. The prior foundational information on the ensuing picture of marriage is important to have in mind, before you look at what the Scriptures say concerning marriage after divorce.

Please be sure that you have completed the previous lessons before doing this lesson. THEN IN COMPLETING THIS LESSON, PLEASE DO ALL FIVE DAYS. Do not stop before you get to Day Five in this lesson.

The Fulfillment of the Anti-type

Lesson 9
Author: Cindy Zeigler
Lesson Nine brings together all that we have learned in the preceding eight weeks, developing the picture of marriage in relationship to Christ and his Bride. It should now be quite clear. What a glorious picture God has drawn for us. What clarity! So much to look forward to!

A King Woos His Bride

Lesson 10
Author: Cindy Zeigler
This final lesson reveals the very sweet and intimate details of the King pursuing His Bride. I hope you can make this very personal!
