Jesus Christ, the Son of David, the Son of Abraham
Topic: Examining the Import of this Truth from Mt 1:1 and Re 22:16.
Sunday, 12th June 2016
Mt 1:1 The book of the genealogy of Jesus Christ, the Son of David, the Son of Abraham
Re 22:16 "I, Jesus, have sent My angel to testify to you these things in the churches. I am the Root and the Offspring of David, the Bright and Morning Star..." 21 The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all. Amen.
1. Introduction
a. Jesus made a claim about himself in the gospel according to Dr Luke - Lu 24:27 And beginning at Moses and all the Prophets, He expounded to them in all the Scriptures the things concerning Himself. The Old Testament is what Jesus was referring to when He mentioned “all the Scriptures” at the moment – this is what was available then.
b. But we know that ‘all scripture’ is God breathed/inspired by God - 2Ti 3:16 All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, - this then helps us to see both OT and NT are in consideration here. NB MOST of the NT must have been in place by the time Paul is writing this letter to Timothy.
c. Our two head verses reveal an obvious point i.e. The NT (in the order we have it) starts with Jesus Christ in the gospel according to Matthew and ends with Him in the Book of Revelation. This leaves no doubt at all in our minds about this – “the whole bible is about Christ or His work in one version or the other”.
d. An hour is not enough to navigate through the entire 42 generations from Abraham to Christ - Mt 1:17 So all the generations from Abraham to David are fourteen generations, from David until the captivity in Babylon are fourteen generations, and from the captivity in Babylon until the Christ are fourteen generations. We will therefore narrow our focus to the meaning and the significance of His identity as
i. the son of David and the son of Abraham – [son of David and Abraham - Mt 1:1 and Root and Offspring of David in Re 22:16b],
ii. Bright and Morning Star as seen in Re 22:16b

The Son of David, the Son of Abraham – Benefit to Israel
2. In Matthew, Jesus genealogy is revealed in David and Abraham
i. Jesus Christ is the fulfillment of the prophesy of the seed of David. God had promised
David, that his throne would be established forever - 2Sa 7:12 "When your days are
fulfilled and you rest with your fathers, I will set up your seed after you, who will come from
your body, and I will establish his kingdom. 13 "He shall build a house for My name, and I will
establish the throne of his kingdom forever.
ii. In the gospel according to Matthew, seven times He is mentioned using this title – once
in recognition of His genealogy - Mt 1:1; four times (connected to a healing sign) Mt 9:27;
12:23; 15:22; 20:30 and twice with regard to his triumphal entry to Jerusalem – Mt 21:5,9.
iii. This title is a messianic in its nature, scope and purpose. He had to be from the lineage of
David, and this provides a scriptural proof that Jesus in his humanity is a direct
descendant of Abraham and David through Joseph His legal father. In Luke Chapter 3, we
see His genealogy, through His mother, Mary back to David.
iv. We are aware Israel did not accept Him as their Messiah when He first appeared in their
midst and they ended up crucifying Him – as a result Israel has remained without a
Messiah for close to 2000 years. However, we know that it will come a time yet future
towards the end of the great tribulation when they will recognize Him as their Messiah -
Zec 12:10 "And I will pour on the house of David and on the inhabitants of Jerusalem the
Spirit of grace and supplication; then they will look on Me whom they pierced. Yes, they will
mourn for Him as one mourns for his only son, and grieve for Him as one grieves for a
firstborn.
v. And we can perhaps remember that as Israel was crucifying their Messiah - even before
His body was removed from the cross Zechariah’s prophesy was still in focus - Joh 19:36
For these things were done that the Scripture should be fulfilled, "Not one of His bones shall
be broken." 37 And again another Scripture says, "They shall look on Him whom they
pierced."

The Son of David, the Son of Abraham – Benefit to the Gentile
vi. Having viewed this matter first in reference to Israel – and matters can only begin this
way for the obvious reason - Ro 1:16 For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ, for it is
the power of God to salvation for everyone who believes, for the Jew first and also for the
Greek - we can now turn to ourselves and see the import of His identity
vii. In appearing as the Son of David (or seed of David) and Root and Offspring of David, - He
had to come in the flesh
- Joh 7:42 "Has not the Scripture said that the Christ comes from the seed of David and
from the town of Bethlehem, where David was?
- Ga 4:4 But when the fullness of the time had come, God sent forth His Son, born of a
woman, born under the law,
- Joh 1:14 And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, the
glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth.
- Ac 2:29 "Men and brethren, let me speak freely to you of the patriarch David, that he is
both dead and buried, and his tomb is with us to this day. 30 "Therefore, being a
prophet, and knowing that God had sworn with an oath to him that of the fruit of his
body, according to the flesh, He would raise up the Christ to sit on his throne
- Ro 1:2 which He promised before through His prophets in the Holy Scriptures, 3
concerning His Son Jesus Christ our Lord, who was born of the seed of David according
to the flesh,
- 2Ti 2:8 Remember that Jesus Christ, of the seed of David, was raised from the dead
according to my gospel,
viii. Let’s (more specifically) loop in Abraham [Son (Seed) of Abraham], by examining some
scriptures - Genesis 15:5 + 22:17 (KJV) + Galatians 3:16.
 Ge 15:5 Then He brought him outside and said, "Look now toward heaven, and count
the stars if you are able to number them." And He said to him, "So shall your
descendants (Hebrew word Zera = Seed) be." NKJV. It is the word ‘seed’ that is used in
KJV and YLT- Ge 15:5 And he brought him forth abroad, and said, Look now toward
heaven, and tell the stars, if thou be able to number them: and he said unto him, So shall
Page 4 of 8
thy seed (NB - singular) be (KJV) and in Gen 15:5 and He bringeth him out without, and
saith, `Look attentively, I pray thee, towards the heavens, and count the stars, if thou
art able to count them;' and He saith to him, `Thus is thy seed.' YLT
 The seed (singular part) is further revealed in Ga 3:16 Now to Abraham and his Seed
were the promises made. He does not say, "And to seeds," as of many, but as of one,
"And to your Seed," who is Christ.
 The promises made to Abraham are also seen in Genesis 22 (in a more amplified
form). In Genesis 22 - Ge 22:17 "blessing I will bless you, and multiplying I will multiply
your descendants as the stars of the heaven and as the sand which is on the seashore;
and your descendants shall possess the gate of their enemies. 18 "In your seed all the
nations of the earth shall be blessed, because you have obeyed My voice."
- Two realms are identified in verse 17 – heavenly (stars of the heaven) and earthly
realm (sand on the seashore). But how can realms fit in here? Look at the words –
‘the descendants will possess the gate of the enemies’ = this is an authority term.
- Descendants of Abraham will exercise authority in the heavenly and Earthly realms.
- The seeds (plural – meaning – believers in Jesus Christ) is further revealed in Ga 3:29 And if
you (believers in Christ) are Christ's, then you are Abraham's seed, and heirs according to
the promise.
3. Therefore the identity of Jesus Christ as son (seed) of David, son (seed) of Abraham –
also speaks of His humanity – incarnation of Christ
- A believer lead of the spirit of God MUST accept and remain persuaded of this truth
i.e. He came in the flesh - 1Jo 4:2 By this you know the Spirit of God: Every spirit that
confesses that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is of God, 3 and every spirit that does
not confess that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is not of God. And this is the spirit of
the Antichrist, which you have heard was coming, and is now already in the world.
- It is only in this state – ‘as man’ - He could have been physically humiliated as He did -
Mt 26:67 Then they spat in His face and beat Him; and others struck Him with the palms
of their hands, 68 saying, "Prophesy to us, Christ! Who is the one who struck You? ... Mt
27:30 Then they spat on Him, and took the reed and struck Him on the head.
- It is only in this ‘state’ – ‘as man’ - that Christ could die on the cross - Php 2:8 And
being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself and became obedient to the
point of death, even the death of the cross.
(i) Denying this truth is denying that man can be saved - Joh 19:30 So when Jesus had
received the sour wine, He said, "It is finished!" And bowing His head, He gave up His
spirit.
(ii) Denying this truth is denying that sin of the world has not been taken care of - Joh
1:29 The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him, and said, "Behold! The Lamb of
God who takes away the sin of the world! Read also Heb 1:3... when He had by Himself
purged our sins...
(iii) Denying this truth is denying what God had always purposed and planned - Re 13:8 All
who dwell on the earth will worship him, whose names have not been written in the
Book of Life of the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world.
(iv) Denying this truth is denying that a believer can lead a victorious life. Why? Because
He [Jesus] overcame Satan in this state – ‘as man’ - He depended totally on the
power of the Word of God energized by the Holy Spirit to overcome and therefore
we can rejoice - Heb 4:15 For we do not have a High Priest who cannot sympathize with
our weaknesses, but was in all points tempted as we are, yet without sin. NB Mt 4:4, 6,
10.
(v) He understands our situation when we get tempted – He knows we will be tempted –
and He also knows that we can overcome all the time - Heb 4:16 Let us therefore come
boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time
of need.
(vi) Our overcoming is not vested in our capacity or abilities BUT on HIM – His abilities in
us, as we submit ourselves to Him - 1Jo 4:4 You are of God, little children, and have
overcome them, because He who is in you is greater than he who is in the world. And in
1Jo 5:4 For whatever is born of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that
has overcome the world--our faith. NB Jas 4:7
Page 6 of 8
(vii) NB He is the author and finisher of this faith - Heb 12:2 looking unto Jesus, the
author and finisher of our faith, who for the joy that was set before Him endured
the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of
God
How are we to understand this other part of His identity - Bright Morning Star?
ii. Bright Morning Star – Connects with Seed (Son) of Abraham. But How?
- This is the part of Christ’s identity connects with son (seed) of Abraham. NB If it is in
the NT we can find it in the OT.
- Nu 24:13 'If Balak were to give me his house full of silver and gold, I could not go beyond
the word of the LORD, to do good or bad of my own will. What the LORD says, that I
must speak'?... 16 The utterance of him who hears the words of God, And has the
knowledge of the Most High, Who sees the vision of the Almighty, Who falls down, with
eyes wide open 17 "I see Him, but not now; I behold Him, but not near; A Star shall come
out of Jacob; A Scepter shall rise out of Israel, And batter the brow of Moab, And
destroy all the sons of tumult.
- Please note 17b - “A Star shall come out of Jacob; A Scepter shall rise out of Israel” – A
Star and Scepter [symbol of authority] connected – and this is out of Jacob/Israel - NB
Abraham – Isaac – Jacob (Israel) – this is how it connects.
- The first time the word scepter is used in scripture is when Jacob is blessing his
children and when he came to Judah he says - Ge 49:10 The scepter shall not depart
from Judah, Nor a lawgiver from between his feet, Until Shiloh comes; And to Him shall
be the obedience of the people.
- Then in Job 38:7 –we see ‘morning stars’ = ‘sons of God’ = angels (only sons rule in
God’s kingdom) mentioned - Job 38:7 When the morning stars sang together, And all
the sons of God shouted for joy?
- Then we see in Re 22:16b, Jesus is referred to as the Bright Morning Star (note Caps) -
the Son of God – BUT we know Jesus Christ is not an angel – He is the one who
created all the morning stars (angels) - Col 1:16 For by Him all things were created that
Page 7 of 8
are in heaven and that are on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions
or principalities or powers. All things were created through Him and for Him.
- For a brief moment (as of necessity) He was made a little lower than them
(angels/morning stars) so that He could die – Heb 2:9 But we see Jesus, who was made
a little lower than the angels, for the suffering of death crowned with glory and honor,
that He, by the grace of God, might taste death for everyone - He is now above them –
hence ‘Bright Morning Star’ title
- Angels are now subject to Him - 1Pe 3:22 who has gone into heaven and is at the right
hand of God, angels and authorities and powers having been made subject to Him. Read
- Eph 1:20-21
Our Encouragement
b. A promise to overcomers in this dispensation - Re 2: 26 "And he who overcomes, and
keeps My works until the end, to him I will give power over the nations 27 'He shall rule
them with a rod of iron; They shall be dashed to pieces like the potter's vessels' - as I also
have received from My Father; 28 "and I will give him the morning star.
c. 2Pe 1: 18 And we heard this voice which came from heaven when we were with Him on
the holy mountain 19 And so we have the prophetic word confirmed, which you do well
to heed as a light that shines in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star
rises in your hearts;
i. Peter here is referring to the time – on the holy mountain – as matters pertaining
to the 7th day (Millennial Kingdom) are being revealed - Mt 17:1 Now after six days
Jesus took Peter, James, and John his brother, led them up on a high mountain by
themselves; 2 and He was transfigured before them. His face shone like the sun, and
His clothes became as white as the light.
ii. This is what we see Jesus speaking of in connection with end of the age in the
parable of the wheat and tares - Mt 13:43 "Then the righteous will shine forth as
the sun in the kingdom of their Father. Those referred to as wheat (sons of the
kingdom will shine forth as the sun in the kingdom.
 They are the wise ones in the parable of the ten virgins who had the extra supply
of oil, who remained prepared for the bridegroom.
 They are the wise ones who will shine as the brightness of the firmament - Da 12:3
Those who are wise shall shine Like the brightness of the firmament, And those who
turn many to righteousness Like the stars forever and ever.
 These are the wise ones in Pr 11:30 The fruit of the righteous is a tree of life, And he
who wins souls is wise. The same overcomers promise we find in - Re 2:7 "He who
has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches. To him who overcomes
I will give to eat from the tree of life, which is in the midst of the Paradise of God."
