Lord Teach Us To Pray
Part Fourteen
1). Mt 6:9 ¶ "In this manner, therefore, pray: Our Father in heaven, Hallowed be Your name. 10 Your kingdom come. Your will be done On earth as it is in heaven. 11 Give us this day our daily bread. 12 And forgive us our debts, As we forgive our debtors. 13 And do not lead us into temptation, But deliver us from the evil one. For Yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.
a). We had seen last week that at the conclusion of our race of the faith, we shall be either resurrected or raptured to Christ’s Judgment Seat and that based on the decisions made there a segment of the eternally redeemed from this dispensation will receive the salvation of their soul and along with this ‘so great a salvation’ will be the redemption of their body, a body that will again have a covering of glory, just as Adam and the Woman had in the Garden before the introduction of sin - Mt 13:41 "The Son of Man will send out His angels, and they will gather out of His kingdom all things that offend, and those who practice lawlessness, 42 "and will cast them into the furnace of fire. There will be wailing and gnashing of teeth. 43 "Then the righteous will shine forth as the sun in the kingdom of their Father. He who has ears to hear, let him hear!
b). In one sense at this time those having received the salvation of their soul will be in the likeness of Adam and the Woman before the fall – those comprising the Bride of Christ will have been taken from the Body of Christ just as the Woman was taken from the body of Adam. Those comprising the Bride of Christ will again be in the image and likeness of God, a 3 part being completely apart from sin with a redeemed spirit, redeemed soul and a redeemed body having received the covering of glory. In another sense though the experience of those comprising the Bride will be quite different from Adam and the Woman as sin will have been dealt with in them for all time. I don’t know the way in which to properly describe this but the salvation of the soul will mean the complete eradication of sin in the person receiving this salvation. This is the complete eradication of the sin nature – there being no more sin also means the body is no longer receiving the wages of sin as it is completely apart from sin also and therefore able to receive the covering of glory.
Lord Teach Us To Pray – Part 14 Page 2
c). I think we can safely assume that those with a redeemed soul and body will never again be troubled by sin.
d). God’s is the Kingdom which requires its rulers to be redeemed in all 3 parts of their being and to have a covering of glory, completely apart from sin – God’s is the power, through His Word that is alone able to make this possible and God’s is the glory that He will give to those who have set their course towards His Kingdom and have surrendered themselves to His power so as to be adopted as a firstborn son - 2Th 2:13 ¶ But we are bound to give thanks to God always for you, brethren beloved by the Lord, because God from the beginning chose you for salvation through sanctification by the Spirit and belief in the truth, 14 to which He called you by our gospel, for the obtaining of the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ.
2). Pr 11:30 ¶ The fruit of the righteous is a tree of life, And he who wins souls is wise.
Re 2:7 "He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches. To him who overcomes I will give to eat from the tree of life, which is in the midst of the Paradise of God."'
a). We might note one more thing that is inextricably connected to the salvation of the soul and the attending glory of God – and that is the tree of life.
b). The tree of life is first seen in the Garden of Eden and is available there for Adam and the Woman - Ge 2:9 And out of the ground the LORD God made every tree grow that is pleasant to the sight and good for food. The tree of life was also in the midst of the garden, and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.
c). And this tree was available to them only while they were in their unfallen condition. Once sin had entered in the tree of life was kept from them
Ge 3:24 So He drove out the man; and He placed cherubim at the east of the garden of Eden, and a flaming sword which turned every way, to guard the way to the tree of life.
d). Now Adam and the Woman in their unfallen state were already eternal beings and so to eat from the tree of life would have nothing to do with living forever – rather we would have to see eating from the tree of life in connection with rulership, which is just what we see in the overcomers’ promise in Revelation 2:7, and just what we see in the connection between the tree and the salvation of the soul in Proverbs 11:30.
Lord Teach Us To Pray – Part 14 Page 3
e). Pr 3:13 ¶ Happy is the man who finds wisdom, And the man who gains understanding; 14 For her proceeds are better than the profits of silver, And her gain than fine gold. 15 She is more precious than rubies, And all the things you may desire cannot compare with her. 16 Length of days is in her right hand, In her left hand riches and honor. 17 Her ways are ways of pleasantness, And all her paths are peace. 18 She is a tree of life to those who take hold of her, And happy are all who retain her.
f). Then here in Proverbs 3:13-18 we see the direct connection between the tree of life and wisdom and understanding. Such a connection inevitably leads us to the realization that the tree of life is the source of the wisdom and understanding that are necessary to rule with justice and equity in Christ’s Kingdom.
g). Those who have produced the fruit of righteousness are promised that they will eat from the tree of life which is ‘in the midst of the paradise of God’ and will therefore having eaten have the wisdom and understanding necessary to rule in righteousness.
h). This we can also see in a foundational type with respect to David’s son Solomon - 2Ch 1:7 On that night God appeared to Solomon, and said to him, "Ask! What shall I give you?" 8 And Solomon said to God: "You have shown great mercy to David my father, and have made me king in his place. 9 "Now, O LORD God, let Your promise to David my father be established, for You have made me king over a people like the dust of the earth in multitude. 10 "Now give me wisdom and knowledge, that I may go out and come in before this people; for who can judge this great people of Yours?" 11 And God said to Solomon: "Because this was in your heart, and you have not asked riches or wealth or honor or the life of your enemies, nor have you asked long life-but have asked wisdom and knowledge for yourself, that you may judge My people over whom I have made you king- 12 "wisdom and knowledge are granted to you; and I will give you riches and wealth and honor, such as none of the kings have had who were before you, nor shall any after you have the like."
i). Because Solomon asked for wisdom and knowledge the Lord also gave him ‘riches and wealth and honor’ and it is the Holy Spirit through Solomon who penned the words of Proverbs 3:16 - Length of days is in her right hand, In her left hand riches and honor.
j). Those who have received the salvation of their soul and have received the glory, who will eat from the tree of life will also be given ‘riches and honor’ commensurate with their high calling and position as a firstborn son of God, a coheir with the Lord Jesus Christ - Re 5:12 saying with a loud
Lord Teach Us To Pray – Part 14 Page 4
voice: "Worthy is the Lamb who was slain To receive power and riches and wisdom, And strength and honor and glory and blessing!"
3). Col 2:2 that their hearts may be encouraged, being knit together in love, and attaining to all riches of the full assurance of understanding, to the knowledge of the mystery of God, both of the Father and of Christ, 3 in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.
a). To eat from the tree of life so as to access the wisdom needed for rulership in Christ’s Kingdom remains for us yet future, but there is wisdom and knowledge that we are to access during our pilgrim journey, that if followed, will lead us to the wisdom of the tree of life.
b). And to explore this a little further we are going to look at an interesting passage of scripture that in part mirrors our present location in ‘the Lord’s prayer’.
4). 1Ch 29:1 ¶ Furthermore King David said to all the assembly: "My son Solomon, whom alone God has chosen, is young and inexperienced; and the work is great, because the temple is not for man but for the LORD God. 2 "Now for the house of my God I have prepared with all my might: gold for things to be made of gold, silver for things of silver, bronze for things of bronze, iron for things of iron, wood for things of wood, onyx stones, stones to be set, glistening stones of various colors, all kinds of precious stones, and marble slabs in abundance. 3 "Moreover, because I have set my affection on the house of my God, I have given to the house of my God, over and above all that I have prepared for the holy house, my own special treasure of gold and silver: 4 "three thousand talents of gold, of the gold of Ophir, and seven thousand talents of refined silver, to overlay the walls of the houses; 5 "the gold for things of gold and the silver for things of silver, and for all kinds of work to be done by the hands of craftsmen. Who then is willing to consecrate himself this day to the LORD?" 6 Then the leaders of the fathers' houses, leaders of the tribes of Israel, the captains of thousands and of hundreds, with the officers over the king's work, offered willingly. 7 They gave for the work of the house of God five thousand talents and ten thousand darics of gold, ten thousand talents of silver, eighteen thousand talents of bronze, and one hundred thousand talents of iron. 8 And whoever had precious stones gave them to the treasury of the house of the LORD, into the hand of Jehiel the Gershonite. 9 Then the people rejoiced, for they had offered willingly, because with a loyal heart they had offered willingly to the LORD; and King David also rejoiced
Lord Teach Us To Pray – Part 14 Page 5
greatly. 10 ¶ Therefore David blessed the LORD before all the assembly; and David said: "Blessed are You, LORD God of Israel, our Father, forever and ever.
11 Yours, O LORD, is the greatness, The power and the glory, The victory and the majesty; For all that is in heaven and in earth is Yours; Yours is the kingdom, O LORD, And You are exalted as head over all. 12 Both riches and honor come from You, And You reign over all. In Your hand is power and might; In Your hand it is to make great And to give strength to all. 13 "Now therefore, our God, We thank You And praise Your glorious name.
a). In these verses we see David’s preparations and the preparations of the leaders of the tribes of Israel to supply all that would be needed for Solomon to build the Lord’s temple – and we no doubt noted the provision of gold and silver and precious stones reminding us of the building we see in
1 Corinthians Chapter 3.
b). Now Solomon’s reign and Solomon’s temple provide for us a type of the coming Millennial Kingdom and Millennial Temple of Christ. It was not during David’s reign that the Temple would be built in the same way that it is not during Man’s day that Christ’s Millennial Temple will be built – only with the coming of the 7th Day will this be accomplished.
c). There will of course be a literal Millennial Temple constructed in Jerusalem, but I would like to draw our attention to another ‘temple’ that is being prepared in the present - 1Ki 6:7 And the temple, when it was being built, was built with stone finished at the quarry, so that no hammer or chisel or any iron tool was heard in the temple while it was being built.
d). Eph 2:19 Now, therefore, you are no longer strangers and foreigners, but fellow citizens with the saints and members of the household of God, 20 having been built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ Himself being the chief cornerstone, 21 in whom the whole building, being joined together, grows into a holy temple in the Lord, 22 in whom you also are being built together for a dwelling place of God in the Spirit.
e). 1Pe 2:4 ¶ Coming to Him as to a living stone, rejected indeed by men, but chosen by God and precious, 5 you also, as living stones, are being built up a spiritual house, a holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ.
f). Just as the stones for Solomon’s Temple were completed in the quarry and then put together so are we, the living stones, being prepared during the present in order to be joined together to grow into a holy temple in the Lord – a spiritual building that will be completed at Christ’s Judgment Seat when all the living stones from throughout this dispensation, those who have
Lord Teach Us To Pray – Part 14 Page 6
been called out from the called, will stand together as the House of Christ. And it is of course our Lord, the One typified by David who has provided for us the gold, silver and precious stones Eph 2:10 For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them.
g). 2Ch 7:1 ¶ When Solomon had finished praying, fire came down from heaven and consumed the burnt offering and the sacrifices; and the glory of the LORD filled the temple.
h). Upon the dedication of Solomon’s Temple ‘fire came down from heaven and consumed the burnt offering and the sacrifices’ and then ‘the glory of the Lord filled the Temple’ – At the Judgment Seat of Christ when all appear before Him we know that our works are tested by fire - 1Co 3:12 Now if anyone builds on this foundation with gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, straw, 13 each one's work will become clear; for the Day will declare it, because it will be revealed by fire; and the fire will test each one's work, of what sort it is. 14 If anyone's work which he has built on it endures, he will receive a reward.
i). Those whose works remain, who receive their reward, will be the same ones who will form ‘the House of Christ’ who will be ‘the Holy temple of the Lord’ and just as the glory of the Lord filled Solomon’s temple so those who are the ‘Holy temple of the Lord’ will be covered in glory.
j). There is then in us a preparation being made as we are shaped and fashioned into God’s building blocks and this preparation, just as we saw typified with David, who is a type of Christ, is equated with gold and silver and precious stones placed in the hands of craftsmen.
k). There is then a building process that is taking place individually and corporately - Eph 4:15 but, speaking the truth in love, may grow up in all things into Him who is the head--Christ-- 16 from whom the whole body, joined and knit together by what every joint supplies, according to the effective working by which every part does its share, causes growth of the body for the edifying of itself in love.
l). This is the very thing Paul draws attention to in the verses that precede those we have just looked at from 1 Corinthians Chapter 3 –
1Co 3:9 For we are God's fellow workers; you are God's field, you are God's building. 10 According to the grace of God which was given to me, as a wise master builder I have laid the foundation, and another builds on it. But let each one take heed how he builds on it.
m). And within this context we will remember this from –
Lord Teach Us To Pray – Part 14 Page 7
2Ti 2:15 Be diligent to present yourself approved to God, a worker who does not need to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.
It is through our correct handling of the Word of truth that we may build on the foundation with gold, silver and precious stones in order to be that dwelling place for God in the Spirit – and in doing so we would not need to be ashamed at the Judgment Seat as this must lead us to the redemption of our body, the covering of glory.
5). Now to draw all of this together let’s go back a little further in foundation to the building of the Tabernacle of Moses – Ex 31:2 "See, I have called by name Bezalel the son of Uri, the son of Hur, of the tribe of Judah. 3 "And I have filled him with the Spirit of God, in wisdom, in understanding, in knowledge, and in all manner of workmanship, 4 "to design artistic works, to work in gold, in silver, in bronze, 5 "in cutting jewels for setting, in carving wood, and to work in all manner of workmanship.
Ex 36:1 ¶ "And Bezalel [in the shadow of God] and Aholiab [tent of his father], and every gifted artisan [lit. wise hearted man] in whom the LORD has put wisdom and understanding, to know how to do all manner of work for the service of the sanctuary, shall do according to all that the LORD has commanded."
a). So what do we see here? The Lord had ‘put wisdom and understanding and knowledge’ in these men to ‘know how to do all manner of work for the service of the sanctuary’, to know how to work with gold, silver and jewels, so that they should ‘do according to all that the Lord has commanded’ and thereby construct the Tabernacle exactly as God wanted.
b). Let’s bring this over into our own experience – we are ‘living stones’ being ‘built up a spiritual house’, we are growing into ‘a Holy temple in the Lord’ – and we have been given the Holy Spirit and we are to be continually filled with the Holy Spirit to guide us unto all truth through the Word of God in which are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.
c). As we have said, not the wisdom and knowledge to rule in the Kingdom as that is the prerogative of the tree of life alone, nor the wisdom of man, but the wisdom and knowledge of God that will allow us to be properly transformed, to work with gold, silver and precious stones, to allow us to be built together, to allow us to be that dwelling place for God in the Spirit when we stand before Him in that Day - 1Co 2:7 But we speak the wisdom of God in a mystery, the hidden wisdom which God ordained before the ages for our glory, 8
Lord Teach Us To Pray – Part 14 Page 8
which none of the rulers of this age knew; for had they known, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory.
d). The wisdom and knowledge that we need to properly build on the foundation of Jesus Christ can only come through God’s Word after the fashion in which He has given it to us – it is God’s wisdom and God’s knowledge given to us that we might be ‘a gifted artisan’ [a diligent worker] – not to construct a physical structure but to allow the work of God in us to form us into a spiritual structure.
e). This is the wisdom and knowledge and understanding to take up our cross and on a continual day to day basis deny ourselves.
f). This is the wisdom and knowledge that we need to overcome the world, the flesh and the devil – and what superlative wisdom and knowledge it is – do you remember how we are to overcome the world? - 1Jo 5:4 For whatever is born of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that has overcome the world--our faith. 5 Who is he who overcomes the world, but he who believes that Jesus is the Son of God?
It is ‘our faith’ – believing that which God has said with regards to Christ’s Kingdom; trusting in His wisdom and His knowledge as the means of organizing our lives to this end, allowing the power of God to work the metamorphosis in us - Pr 3:5 Trust in the LORD with all your heart, And lean not on your own understanding; 6 In all your ways acknowledge Him, And He shall direct your paths. 7 ¶ Do not be wise in your own eyes; Fear the LORD and depart from evil. 8 It will be health to your flesh, And strength to your bones.
g). To overcome the flesh God’s wisdom tells us - Ro 8:13 For if you live according to the flesh you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live.
It is by dying to self that the flesh is to be overcome.
h). And to overcome the devil it is the wisdom of God pure and simple –
Jas 4:7 Therefore submit to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you.
And according to Peter we are to resist him ‘steadfast in the faith’.
i). It is God’s wisdom that enables us to be victorious in the spiritual warfare - Eph 6:10 ¶ Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might. 11 Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.
j). And God’s wisdom and knowledge that makes it possible for us to patiently endure through the trials and testing of this life which are shaping us and sculpting us to fit perfectly together as a Holy temple.
Lord Teach Us To Pray – Part 14 Page 9
6). And it is God’s wisdom that brings to mind a familiar truth that it would be remiss to overlook as we bring ‘the Lord’s prayer’ to a close –
Ro 5:1 ¶ Therefore, having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, 2 through whom also we have access by faith into this grace in which we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God. 3 And not only that, but we also glory in tribulations, knowing that tribulation produces perseverance; 4 and perseverance, character; and character, hope.5 Now hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out in our hearts by the Holy Spirit who was given to us.
a). It is of course the truth, the wisdom and knowledge, that suffering must precede glory, just as the Lord Himself said - Lu 24:26 "Ought not the Christ to have suffered these things and to enter into His glory?"
b). And it is our Lord who has set for us the example that we are to follow - 1Pe 2:20 For what credit is it if, when you are beaten for your faults, you take it patiently? But when you do good and suffer, if you take it patiently, this is commendable before God. 21 For to this you were called, because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that you should follow His steps:
c). Ro 8:16 The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, 17 ¶ and if children, then heirs--heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ, if indeed we suffer with Him, that we may also be glorified together. 18 For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us.
d). Our Lord we will remember suffered as He died in His flesh and we are to suffer as we die to the flesh. Our suffering in the flesh may be a result of our overcoming the world, the flesh and the devil or it might come through persecution and tribulation at the hands of others – but which ever it is it will require the putting to death of our flesh in order to do that which is right scripturally, to exercise the wisdom God has given us and produce works of gold, silver and precious stones - Mt 5:44 "But I say to you, love your enemies, bless those who curse you, do good to those who hate you, and pray for those who spitefully use you and persecute you, 45 "that you may be sons of your Father in heaven; for He makes His sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust.
e). And encompassed in this, as we have seen in previous weeks, is forgiving ‘our debtors’ – the opportunity to forgive those who spitefully use us and persecute us is one of the greatest privileges we can receive, as in forgiveness is the very nature and character of God. What wisdom.
Lord Teach Us To Pray – Part 14 Page 10
f). In the midst of this let’s also remember - Mt 5:10 Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness' sake, For theirs is the kingdom of heaven. 11 "Blessed are you when they revile and persecute you, and say all kinds of evil against you falsely for My sake. 12 "Rejoice and be exceedingly glad, for great is your reward in heaven, for so they persecuted the prophets who were before you.
g). 2Co 4:16 Therefore we do not lose heart. Even though our outward man is perishing, yet the inward man is being renewed day by day. 17 For our light affliction, which is but for a moment, is working for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory, 18 while we do not look at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen. For the things which are seen are temporary, but the things which are not seen are eternal.
h). Here then is a glimpse into the treasures of wisdom and knowledge – let us use this wisdom to be a skillful artisan as we prepare for that coming Day of His glory, let us rightly divide the word of truth and let us continue to seek His wisdom, understanding and knowledge with rejoicing and thanksgiving - Jas 1:5 If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him.
7). Da 12:3 Those who are wise shall shine Like the brightness of the firmament, And those who turn many to righteousness Like the stars forever and ever.
8). Next week, if the Lord is willing.
