Message Notes1). 1Sa 10:1 ? Then Samuel took a flask of oil and poured it on his head, and kissed him and said: "Is it not because the LORD has anointed you commander over His inheritance?
1Sa 15:1 ? Samuel also said to Saul, "The LORD sent me to anoint you king over His people, over Israel. Now therefore, heed the voice of the words of the LORD.
a). Saul is anointed by Samuel under God?s direction to be ?commander over His inheritance?, ?king over His people?
b). And Saul receives the instruction ?heed the voice of the words of the Lord?
2). However Saul does not do this and the result is that he is rejected by God as king over His people - 1Sa 15:22 Then Samuel said: "Has the LORD as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices, As in obeying the voice of the LORD? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, And to heed than the fat of rams. 23 For rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft, And stubbornness is as iniquity and idolatry. Because you have rejected the word of the LORD, He also has rejected you from being king."
a). Not only is Saul rejected as king, but chooses for Himself a new king over His people - 1Sa 16:1 ? Now the LORD said to Samuel, "How long will you mourn for Saul, seeing I have rejected him from reigning over Israel? Fill your horn with oil, and go; I am sending you to Jesse the Bethlehemite. For I have provided Myself a king among his sons."
b). This is of course David - 1Sa 16:13 Then Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed him in the midst of his brothers; and the Spirit of the LORD came upon David from that day forward. So Samuel arose and went to Ramah.
3). Although Saul is rejected and David anointed there is a significant number of years that pass before David ascends the throne and exercises the regal authority he has been anointed to carry out.
a). In this we see a principle of Biblical government whereby even a rejected ruler is allowed to continue his rule until the time that God sees fit to replace him. Only God can appoint crowned rulers and only God can replace them.
4). In the intervening period we see David ?exciled? from the kingdom of Saul and while in this distant place many who were dissatisfied with conditions in Saul?s kingdom left all they had to join David.
1Sa 22:1 ? David therefore departed from there and escaped to the cave of Adullam. And when his brothers and all his father's house heard it, they went down there to him. 2 And everyone who was in distress, everyone who was in debt, and everyone who was discontented gathered to him. So he became captain over them. And there were about four hundred men with him.
a). These were all Jews who had aligned themselves with David, making life choices with a view to David one day taking the crown from Saul, exercising the kingly authority he was given, with them beside him also in positions of authority. They lived their lives by faith based upon what God had said concerning the future rule of the son of Jesse.
5). All of this is a type, a word picture of the circumstances that exist with regards to Christ and Satan.
a). Satan was God?s anointed ruler over the earth - Eze 28:14 "You were the anointed cherub who covers; I established you; You were on the holy mountain of God; You walked back and forth in the midst of fiery stones.
i) Joh 14:30 "I will no longer talk much with you, for the ruler of this world is coming, and he has nothing in Me.
ii) 2Co 4:4 whose minds the god of this age has blinded,
b). But as with Saul he was rejected as king because of rebellion against the word of God - Isa 14:13 For you have said in your heart: 'I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God; I will also sit on the mount of the congregation On the farthest sides of the north;
6). And just like the account of David and Saul God had chosen for Himself a new king over His creation - Mt 28:18 And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, "All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth.
a). He is the Christ ? the anointed One.
7). However He does not yet wear the crown and has not yet ascended the throne because the time that God sees fit has not arrived. Not until the inheritance is redeemed will Christ take the crown from Satan - Re 5:5 But one of the elders said to me, "Do not weep. Behold, the Lion of the tribe of Judah, the Root of David, has prevailed to open the scroll and to loose its seven seals."
8). Between the time of Stan?s rejection and Christ redeeming the inheritance Christ remains in a distant place and those Christians distressed and dissatisfied with affairs in Satan?s kingdom are leaving all they have to join Christ as outcasts from this world - Joh 15:19 "If you were of the world, the world would love its own. Yet because you are not of the world, but I chose you out of the world, therefore the world hates you.
a). Looking to the time when Christ shall ascend His throne and they as coheirs shall ascend the throne with Him -Re 3:21 "To him who overcomes I will grant to sit with Me on My throne,
b). As David became the captain of those drawn to him so we find this of Christ - Heb 2:10 ? For it was fitting for Him, for whom are all things and by whom are all things, in bringing many sons to glory, to make the captain of their salvation perfect through sufferings.
9). 2Co 6:17 Therefore "Come out from among them And be separate, says the Lord. Do not touch what is unclean, And I will receive you."
18 "I will be a Father to you, And you shall be My sons and daughters, Says the LORD Almighty."
10). Now is a time to choose
Joh 17:9 "I pray for them. I do not pray for the world but for those whom You have given Me, for they are Yours. 10 "And all Mine are Yours, and Yours are Mine, and I am glorified in them. 11 ? "Now I am no longer in the world, but these are in the world, and I come to You. Holy Father, keep through Your name those whom You have given Me, that they may be one as We are. 12 "While I was with them in the world, I kept them in Your name. Those whom You gave Me I have kept; and none of them is lost except the son of perdition, that the Scripture might be fulfilled. 13 "But now I come to You, and these things I speak in the world, that they may have My joy fulfilled in themselves.14 "I have given them Your word; and the world has hated them because they are not of the world, just as I am not of the world. 15 "I do not pray that You should take them out of the world, but that You should keep them from the evil one. 16 "They are not of the world, just as I am not of the world. 17 ? "Sanctify them by Your truth. Your word is truth. 18 "As You sent Me into the world, I also have sent them into the world. 19 "And for their sakes I sanctify Myself, that they also may be sanctified by the truth. 20 ? "I do not pray for these alone, but also for those who will believe in Me through their word;
